Somewhere beyond the last charted system, a relay station drifts in silence. It was built by parties unknown, for purposes unrecorded. No crew remains. No manifest was ever filed. The structure still stands — massive, dark, slowly rotating — and nobody has been able to explain why it was placed there, or who placed it.

Despite the silence, the station transmits. Every day at 00:00 UTC, a signal leaves the relay and propagates outward across the network. It arrives corrupted. Fragmented. Barely coherent. The pattern changes each time. The timing never does. Nobody can explain why it keeps transmitting. Nobody has found a way to stop it.

Each transmission contains an embedded frequency pattern — a signal within the signal. Every pattern has exactly one correct decode path. The origin of the embedded patterns has never been identified. Some analysts believe they are procedurally generated. Others believe they are messages. There has been no consensus.

You picked up the signal. You don’t know how — perhaps an old receiver caught it, perhaps someone forwarded the frequency without context. But now you’re tuned in, and the pattern is waiting. You have six attempts to route the beam to its receiver before the window closes and the signal fades.

You are not alone. Every day, thousands of operators across the world open the same signal at the same frequency. They work independently, in silence, with the same grid and the same hidden path. Some are fast. Some are deliberate. A few complete the circuit on the first attempt and never say how. You compare notes only through the Signal Board — a ranked record of who decoded what, and in how many moves.

There is no cooperation. There is no communication. There is only the signal, the grid, and the six chances you have to get it right.

The Signal Board shows who answered the call. Rank is not assigned — it is earned by the number of moves you needed, nothing more. The operator who decoded in one move sits above the operator who needed five. There is no debate about the order. The beam either reached the receiver or it did not.

Streaks are sacred continuity. Each day you decode the signal, the counter increments. Each day you miss, it resets to zero. There is no partial credit. An unbroken streak is a record of every single day you answered the call when the signal arrived. Operators do not speak of their streaks often. They do not need to.

Pro Operators carry a marker on the Signal Board. It identifies them, but it does not elevate them. Rank is still determined by moves. The marker is acknowledgement, not advantage. A Pro Operator who takes six moves still sits below a free operator who took two.
